Agueteca is a Mayan ruin, deep in the PÈtÈn. The pictures at the top are an image of of a very beautiful and important stele that had been vandalized by theives within days of our visit. A large piece had been sawed from the carved stone, and the stele had been broken into several pieces.
The image below is one of the fragments of another stelethat had been destroyed in a similar fashion years ago. Notice that in the image belowthe face of a Mayan princess was removed from the stone, to be taken andsold.
